Police clamp down on traffic offences and uncover £25,000 cash in major operation

Date published: 02 January 2025

A major police operation in Rochdale on 23 December led to multiple traffic violations being addressed and the discovery of £25,000 in cash, suspected to be linked to money laundering.

The Kirkholt Neighbourhood Policing Team organised "Operation Considerate," a preventative initiative aimed at making Greater Manchester’s roads safer during the festive period.

Running from 12:30 pm to 2:30 pm, the operation saw 29 vehicles pulled over for checks. Officers issued 13 general warnings and handed out several Traffic Offence Reports, including:

  • 5 for failing to wear seatbelts
  • 2 for illegal registration plates
  • 4 for using mobile phones while driving

Additionally, three vehicles were seized for being driven without insurance.

One driver attempted to evade the checkpoint, but their efforts backfired spectacularly. Officers stopped the individual, uncovering a suspected money laundering case.

The driver, now under investigation, had £25,000 in cash seized and spent the night in police custody. The case may progress to court, with the individual potentially facing a magistrate or judge.

A spokesperson for the Kirkholt Neighbourhood Policing Team said this incident serves as "a stark reminder that law enforcement efforts extend beyond just traffic violations and can uncover more serious criminal activity."

This proactive policing effort highlights the commitment of Rochdale’s officers to ensuring community safety, both on the roads and beyond.

The operation underscores how local law enforcement uses targeted initiatives to uncover broader criminal behaviour, sending a clear message that unlawful activities will not go unchecked.

Residents praised the team’s diligence in addressing road safety and applauded the swift action taken against the attempted evasion. These efforts come as part of Greater Manchester Police’s ongoing commitment to safer streets.
