Community spirit shines at Rochdale men's health survivor's group

Date published: 30 December 2024

A local group supporting men living with medical conditions is providing a vital lifeline in Rochdale. The Men’s Health survivor group meets monthly on Wednesdays from 10 am to 12 pm, with Rochdale Football Club generously offering their space free of charge.

The group, run by Alan Phipps, a stroke survivor, and Ian, welcomes men dealing with health challenges such as strokes, dementia, heart attacks, cancer, or any other medical condition.

The environment also serves as a welcoming space for those simply seeking companionship and conversation over a cup of tea.

Heidi Phipps, Alan’s wife, shared the importance of the group. “This to me is a lifeline, as Alan is a stroke victim, and I know from personal experience that talking about things with other men is good for you,” she said.

This December, the group organised a Christmas party, overcoming financial limitations with contributions and support from the community. Heidi, who works in Rochdale, took a day off to prepare a buffet for the event, which members contributed to as well.

Seeking entertainment, Heidi reached out to a colleague involved with a brass band. The colleague connected the group with the GUD4UCHOIR, a choir promoting health and wellbeing through song; a fitting addition to the event given the group’s shared focus.

“The choir was fantastic,” said Heidi. “We had a quiz and a raffle, which we all donated a present for. A lady called Joanne, from Home Instead, also attended and shared leaflets about activities while engaging with all the guests. I think there were about 23 people there.”

Heidi expressed gratitude for the outpouring of support that made the event possible. “We’d like to give thanks to Rochdale Football Club, who donate this room every month, Johanna Stock for arranging the choir and helping me all day with food, warm drinks, and organising furniture, Julie Murphy for donating to our buffet, Ina’s wife Debbie, and to my husband Alan, who is my inspiration.

"All these people want to help and make these chaps feel that they are not on their own.”
