MEP's researcher fined for racial abuse

A Stockport Liberal Democrat Councillor has been fined after he racially abused a policeman in a drunken rant.

Christian Walker, who at the time of the incident worked as a researcher for Rochdale's Member of European Parliament Chris Davies, started his verbal attack after he was refused alcohol at an open-all-hours supermarket in Stockport.

Trafford's Magistrates fined him £200 and ordered him to pay £300 costs.

Walker got drunk at a staff leaving party for a member of Chris Davies' office, where he was working in August last year. The 34-year old entered the supermarket at around 2am to buy more alcohol but was told that he was too drunk to be served.

A policeman, believed to be of Chinese/British ethnicity, intervened and that was when Walker made a racially abusive remark.

MEP Chris Davies said: "My own view is that Chris Walker is a young man who got drunk, behaved stupidly, has been punished by a court of law and has suffered the embarrassment and humiliation of his drunken words appearing in newspapers everywhere.

"I don't believe in telling people who behave badly that they will never have another chance."

Walker has been suspended from his current position with the North West Liberal Democrats.
