Three-quarters of Rochdale residents who have joined a new scheme designed to support disadvantaged people have successfully moved into work or education, including one inspiring warehouse worker who has launched her own Thai massage business.
The initiative, Better Life Chances, is run by social enterprise Upturn and focuses on boosting confidence and improving the skills of long-term unemployed individuals, young people, and new arrivals to the UK.
For Pimjai Iliff, the programme was a game-changer. It helped her channel her entrepreneurial spirit and passion for healing into a thriving business on Oldham Road. Pimjai, who arrived in Britain from Bangkok, Thailand, in 2019, initially worked in warehouses but longed for a more sustainable and fulfilling career.
Janet Whitehead, head of employability and training at Upturn, said Pimjai’s success came from finding the right opportunity: “The key here was to find something that she loved, and an opening came up on a massage course which she grabbed. She then worked tirelessly to identify a premises – and now has a thriving business.”
The Better Life Chances programme has already proven transformational since its launch in May this year. By offering personalised support, it addresses a variety of challenges faced by participants.
Maria Williams, Upturn’s HR director, explained: “There are barriers in the way of some people’s progress, from chaotic family lives to learning difficulties and lack of confidence.
"Mentoring and fostering growth really does make a difference, as does having the contacts and funding – which comes from national adult learning organisation WEA. Begun in May this year, it has already proved genuinely life-changing.”
The programme provides training opportunities in key sectors, including:
- ESOL (English for Speakers of Other Languages)
- Gaining a care certificate
- The security industry
- Becoming a teaching assistant
- Massage therapy
- Electrical installation
- Achieving essential GCSEs
Pimjai’s new business now offers a range of therapeutic services, including hot stone, full-body and foot massages, and body scrubs.
She and her emerging team are also planning to introduce cupping therapy soon, a treatment that has gained popularity among celebrities like the Kardashians.
“Unlike traditional massage, Thai massage uses therapeutic touch, and your body is relaxed whilst being manipulated,” Pimjai said. “It is a fascinating practice and is very popular with people today who lead stressful lives that can affect their mind and body.”
Reflecting on her journey, Pimjai credited the programme for helping her realise her dreams: “I would never have been able to open my salon without this programme. It gave me the skills and confidence to be my own boss, and I thank Upturn, the funders, and the people of Rochdale for helping me to realise my dream.”
