M62 closed in "police incident" connected to person on Rakewood viaduct

A stretch of the M62 near Rochdale has been closed today following a police incident, in which there was concern for a person’s welfare on a viaduct.

Officers attended the scene and on the eastbound carriageway between junctions 21 at Milnrow and 22 for Saddleworth - with the entire eastbound carriageway closed between the two junctions at around 1pm. 

Drivers are being warned to expect delays today (Wednesday 4 December). 

National Highways says drivers are facing delays approaching the scene.

A National Highways spokesperson said: "The #M62 eastbound is closed between J21 #Rochdale #Milnrow and J22 #Denshaw due to a Police led incident.

"Emergency services are on scene. There are 2 miles congestion on approach so allow extra journey time."

A Greater Manchester Police spokesperson said: "We are currently responding to reports of a concern for welfare at Rakewood Viaduct after we were called at 12.30pm today (4 December 2024).

"Emergency services are in attendance and road closures are in place.

"We thank the public for their patience."
