MP spotlights ‘hidden horror’ of domestic abuse with dedicated surgery

Elsie Blundell, Member of Parliament for Heywood and Middleton North, is holding a dedicated surgery in November for anyone needing support and help as a result of domestic abuse.
The surgery will be held on Friday 22 November between 11am and 1pm, as part of the White Ribbon campaign which also encourages men to help make safe spaces for women and girls.
“Being a victim of domestic abuse can feel like a very lonely place, as so much of it happens in secret,” said Elsie Blundell MP. “But we want women to know that there are people who care and are willing to help with specialist services.
The surgery will be held in a secret location, with appropriate security to ensure the safety of anyone who attends.
“You must email my office first in confidence, and they will only make details available to genuine cases. The safety of my constituents is paramount.” Elsie added.
The White Ribbon campaign challenges men to be active in stopping violence against women and girls by condemning it and stepping in if they see it in public.
“Any violence is obviously wrong, and people feel uncomfortable when they see abuse happening in front of them. The purpose of the campaign is to make the abuser uncomfortable instead,” said Elsie. “That’s why I fully support the campaign.”
The White Ribbon campaign in Rochdale lasts for 16 days including a procession to Rochdale Town Hall on Monday 25 November and an awareness-raising event in Middleton on the 26th. The campaign is run in conjunction with Rochdale Connections Trust and Women’s Housing Action Group.
The MP is also keen to make sure everyone who needs help is welcome to the surgery. She added: “Domestic abuse takes many forms, including financial abuse, coercion and control. It also isn’t just felt by women and we encourage anyone who needs help, regardless of gender, to be in touch and seek specialist help.”
Anyone who wishes to attend or seek support should email Elsie at: elsie.blundell.mp@parliament.uk or call 01706 436329.
