The Rochdale borough is witnessing a significant rise in jobseekers, as the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) reports a 25% increase in claimant numbers over the past year. This includes a 15% increase among younger jobseekers aged 18-24 and a concerning 32% increase in those over 50.
Jenny Stanton, DWP partnership manager, said Rochdale’s employment advisers are actively working to help residents seize local job opportunities.
She added: “Our Rochdale Work Coaches are committed to reviewing Universal Credit so people receive the support they need.
“Our plan to get Britain working will help more people into work and spread opportunity and prosperity to everyone – wherever they live.”
With more Rochdale residents transitioning to Universal Credit from legacy benefits, the DWP anticipates further increases in claimants.
Jenny emphasised that the DWP’s priority is to connect local people with local jobs. She encouraged jobseekers to explore seasonal employment opportunities, such as those available during the Christmas and new year period, as a way to gain valuable skills and re-enter the workforce.
She continued: “Now is a great time for jobseekers to give their career aspirations a new focus.”
The DWP is also promoting its Sector Based Work Academies (SWAPs) across the Rochdale borough, offering a pathway to employment in specific industries.
Funded by the government, these academies help equip jobseekers with the skills needed for in-demand roles, with additional financial support available for travel, workwear, and tools when required.
Currently, the DWP is hosting SWAPs with Go Northwest and C&D Security, opening avenues for careers in transport and security.
Go Northwest’s programme offers aspiring bus drivers, including those new to the industry, the opportunity to train for five weeks with full-time hours.
The academy includes pre-employment training and a guaranteed job interview. Jenny explained: “Working on a 20-hour weekly contract, new recruits will become a friendly, familiar face responsible for transporting the city’s children safely."
Similarly, C&D Security’s SWAP covers essential skills for door supervisor roles, including customer service, substance misuse awareness, safeguarding, and community networking.
By directly connecting employers with jobseekers at the Jobcentre, the DWP says it has simplified the recruitment process and made it more effective for the employers it works with, helping jobseekers move into work.
Upcoming jobs fair and additional resources
The DWP’s next recruitment event, ‘Your Time to Shine’, specifically for jobseekers over 40, will be held on 28 November from 10am to 2pm at Rochdale Training.
Attendees will have the chance to meet with over ten employers and training providers, showcasing their skills and life experiences to connect with potential employment opportunities. Jobseekers interested in attending should speak with their work coach for more details.
The DWP is also encouraging employers to consider filling vacancies through these recruitment events and Jobcentre partnerships.
