Illegal off-road biking leads to more arrests and seizures

Date published: 31 October 2024

Police officers are continuing to take action on illegal biking on local moorland, with more arrests and seizures over the weekend (Saturday 26 October).

The collaborative operation included officers from the Rochdale North and East Neighbourhood Teams, Rochdale Special Constabulary, GMP traffic department, and Lancashire Police, alongside community volunteers who provided crucial support throughout the day.

The coordinated effort led to a series of significant actions against those violating off-road regulations. Lancashire Police made an arrest of a man suspected of driving while unfit due to drug use.

Additionally, two Section 59 Police Reform Act warnings were issued to bikers attempting to access Rooley Moor illegally.

As part of the operation, volunteers noticed a group of off-road bikers heading towards Owd Betts across the moors.

The Rochdale neighbourhood officers intercepted the group near Ashworth Reservoir, where the bikers were subsequently detained.

Since they had bypassed multiple Section 59 warning signs on their way onto the moorland, their bikes were seized under this legislation. Before the bikers can reclaim their vehicles, they will need to present proof of ownership and pay a substantial fine.

An officer said: "This action will hopefully dissuade them from carrying out such illegal activities in the future. Authorities are determined to continue these operations, with more planned over the coming weeks and months."
