Big Listen will get children talking

Date published: 28 October 2008

Young people across Heywood, Middleton and Rochdale will get a chance to have their say during a week of activities being held from 17 - 21 November. ‘The Big Listen’ is aimed at ensuring young voices are heard, say organisers from Rochdale Council.

More than 70 schools, children’s centres and young people’s groups will be holding their own events, ranging from litter picking and environmental workshops, autumn trails and a ‘turn the lights off day.’

For 2008 the theme is ‘the environment'. Helen Wensley from Rochdale Council said that with climate change being such a big issue, there has never been a more important time for environmental education.

She said: “The next generation is going to inherit a huge array of environmental challenges. This is the opportunity for the children of our borough to let us know their thoughts and ideas on how we, and they, can make a difference. We want to know their ideas on how we can all look after the planet for the future.

“It’s an opportunity for children and young people to come together, discuss issues that affect their day-to-day lives and share their ideas and concerns with adult decision-makers.”

40 schools from across Heywood, Middleton and Rochdale are involved in the main event on Thursday 20 November at Heywood Civic Hall.

The day will consist of workshops followed by feedback and presentations to key officers and dignitaries in the afternoon. A film will also be shown featuring local children talking about their ideas and aspirations on the environment.

Over the past five years the Big Listen has enabled thousands of youngsters to have their say.

Ms Wensley continued: “It’s educational, fun and a really valuable project...making sure that young people have the opportunity to get their voices heard.”
