Jolly Josh given £20,000 grant by National Lottery Community Fund

Local charity Jolly Josh has been awarded a £20,000 grant from The National Lottery Community Fund to support its hydrotherapy pool, a vital resource for families in the community.

The funding will go towards the ongoing running costs of the much-needed facility, which offers a range of therapeutic sessions for children with disabilities.

The Jolly Josh Hydrotherapy Suite features a 2.5m x 5m pool equipped with a ceiling hoist system, along with a projector and music system to enhance the experience.

The pool provides hydrotherapy sessions led by skilled staff, including hydro lead Natalie, as well as Family Splash and Splash Together sessions, which allow families to bond in a therapeutic environment.

However, maintaining the hydrotherapy pool is costly due to the required room and water temperatures, as well as regular maintenance.

The benefits of hydrotherapy are well-documented, with sessions improving mobility, muscle tone, respiratory function, and offering pain relief for children with complex needs.

Fundraising manager Liz Dodd expressed the charity’s gratitude for the grant, saying: "Jolly Josh is a lifeline of support to many families.

“With costs rising to over £300,000 a year to operate, we rely solely on fundraising, donations, and grants. We were overwhelmed to receive the news of the £20,000 award from the National Lottery Community Fund."

The charity is facing £50,000 worth of repairs to the hydrotherapy pool, and the grant brings them closer to starting essential work.

She added: "With over 50 sessions a week, our hydrotherapy pool is well used and well-loved. For children with complex needs and physical disabilities, the warm water is able to relieve pain and improve general health, amongst many other benefits."
