Woman raises £1,500 for Parkinson's group in memory of late husband

A local resident has raised £1,500 for the Rochdale branch of Parkinson’s UK, in memory of her late husband.

Anita Lewis organised the charity garden party held in Syke on Sunday (15 September), after saying the group had played a key role during her husband's illness.

The event received distinguished support from deputy mayor Janet Emsley and her consort Ken Emsley, who mingled with guests and expressed their pleasure in being part of the occasion.

Entertainment for the day included a performance by the Rochdale Harmony Choir, led by conductor Freda Farnworth.

The mixed choir performed a selection of well-known songs in four-part harmony. The 90-strong audience was captivated by the choir’s performance.

Also supporting the day’s entertainment was a group of guitarists from the U3A group, led by Jeff Meek. They meet weekly at Butterworth Hall on Tuesdays from 1–3pm and performed a lively set, including popular hits from the 1960s and rock and roll numbers sung by Olwyn Wnittle, which had the audience up and dancing.

Despite the less-than-ideal weather, the summer garden party proceeded under a series of gazebos. Guests were treated to drinks and a delicious lunch, generously provided by Anita Lewis.

Speaking about the event, Anita shared how much the local Parkinson’s UK group had meant to her and her husband, offering them a social outlet and the chance to meet new friends.

Following her husband's recent passing, the event was her way of showing gratitude to the group, as well as to the friends and family who have supported them throughout their life together.

The £1,500 raised will go to the Parkinson’s UK Rochdale branch, which continues to support individuals and families affected by Parkinson’s disease in the local area.
