Charity partners with Reel Cinema for domestic abuse awareness film

Date published: 08 September 2024

Rochdale-based charity WHAG, which specialises in supporting victims of domestic abuse and homelessness, has recently collaborated with Reel Cinema Rochdale to provide assistance to local residents who might be affected by the release of the new film It Ends With Us.

The film adapted from the bestselling book of the same name, has gained significant popularity on TikTok, making it one of the most anticipated releases of the year.

However, both the book and the film explore challenging themes, including domestic abuse and unhealthy relationship behaviours, which could potentially trigger distress in viewers.

In anticipation of this, WHAG proactively reached out to Reel Cinema Rochdale to offer their support. Together, they developed a plan to provide resources and assistance to members of the community who might find the film's content difficult to process.

WHAG created a range of supportive materials specifically for this occasion. These included leaflets and keyrings offering information on identifying healthy and unhealthy behaviours in relationships, as well as guidance on the steps to take if someone suspects they or someone they know may be experiencing domestic abuse. These resources were made available at the cinema on the film’s release date, 9 August 2024.

Ahead of the release, some viewers had already taken the leaflets, a sign that the collaboration was addressing a real need within the community.

Reel Cinema continued to update WHAG on the positive feedback from customers. WHAG expressed their satisfaction at being able to provide informal access to local support services, highlighting this partnership as a fantastic example of local organisations working together to support the community.

WHAG remains committed to empowering individuals by equipping them with the skills and resources they need to take control of their lives. This collaboration with Reel Cinema is just one example of their ongoing efforts to reach out and provide crucial support to those in need.
