Popular nightclub set to have alcohol licence reviewed following ‘serious violence and disorder’

Date published: 02 September 2024

A popular nightclub in Rochdale will have its licence reviewed next week following alleged incidents of ‘serious violence and disorder’.

Greater Manchester Police submitted an application for the review of Ko-Ko Lounge’s alcohol licence to the council on 19 July 2024. The force claim there has been a number of serious violence incidents as well as under 18’s being allowed in and being served alcohol.

The force suggested that the council should revoke the nightclub’s licence in light of recent incidents – meaning they would no longer be able to serve punters booze.

Council papers read: “The review application was made under the licensing objective the Prevention of Crime and Disorder and seeks the revocation of the Premises Licence.

“In summary, the review is being sought on the grounds that there have been a number of incidents of serious violence and disorder at the licensed premises; allegations of persons under the age of 18 being permitted on the premises and consuming alcohol and other associated concerns.”

The police believe removing the Packer Street site’s licence would help prevent crime and disorder in the town centre area of Rochdale, according to council papers. A meeting of the licensing sub-committee held at Number One Riverside on 9 September will be conducted in order to review the licence and make a decision on whether they alter or remove the licence of the nightclub.

Concerns were last raised by GMP in relation to the establishment back in March 2022 when the force raised their concerns over operational controls at the premises. Following a review hearing, council papers state that the conditions of KoKo Lounge’s licence were changed by the sub-committee then to implement a new dress code; ban drinks on the dance floor; stopping revellers entering past 3.30am; and adding a security staff member upstairs.

Representatives from the night club as well as GMP are able to make their arguments at the sub-committee meeting next week before any decisions are made.
