Pensioner robbed by conmen

Date published: 27 October 2008

An 84-year-old Middleton woman had cash and jewellery stolen from her home after she was conned by two men.

One of the man knocked at the side door of the woman's house on Warwick Road at 12.30pm on Wednesday (22 October), claiming that he needed to turn the woman's water off.

He checked under the sink in the kitchen before leaving the victim to open the front door and let the other man into the house.

The second man went upstairs and searched through the bedrooms, stealing cash and jewellery.

When the man had finished upstairs, both men then left the house.

The first man has been described as white, between 20 and 30 years of age, 5ft 10ins tall, of an average build with short light brown hair. He was wearing a multi-coloured coat and possibly had an Irish accent.

The woman did not see the second man.

Detective Constable Nick Price of Rochdale CID said: "While this woman was not hurt she was left incredibly distressed by this.

"She is most upset at some of the jewellery that was taken as it of great sentimental value to her.

"If anyone noticed anyone suspicious in the area, please get in touch."

Anyone with information should contact Rochdale CID on 0161 856 4644 or call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
