Date published: 09 August 2024

After winning the Inner Warrior Development league last season the players and coaches of The Valkyrie’s, Rochdale Rugby Union Women's team could be excused for taking a few months off to enjoy the summer weather. But not these ladies, who are already gearing up for more successes next season, already back in training, and now actively seeking new players.

Rochdale Rugby Union Club offers free taster training sessions every Tuesday at Moorgate Avenue, off Bury Road, Rochdale, from 6.45pm to 8pm, with additional training on Thursday evenings from 6.15pm to 7.30pm. Games are played on Sundays from September through to the end of April.

The Valkyries boast a diverse mix of senior players and newcomers, all of whom are proud amateurs.

Lily aged 21 and plays at number ten said: “I wanted to get fit, but hated going to the gym. I was recommended the Rochdale Rugby Club's women’s team by a friend, and I absolutely love it! Rugby Union is a great team sport, it focuses on cohesion, and you can socialise with your teammates as well.”

The team is open to new members aged 17 and above. Whether returning to the game or looking to try something new players of all abilities, ages, and fitness levels are welcome at the club.

“Growing women’s sports is always a challenge, but at Rochdale Rugby Union Club, we feel incredibly supported and included as a women’s team. It’s all about getting local people interested and onto the pitch. We are passionate about introducing as many women as possible to the sport,” said Hollie Dews, the Valkyries’ number eight and team captain.

Adding: “Come and join the Valkyries and be part of a supportive and enthusiastic community, dedicated to promoting women’s rugby in Rochdale.”
