Elm Wood School team joins Race for Life to support teacher undergoing cancer treatment

Date published: 14 July 2024

A team of 47 from Elm Wood School participated in the Race for Life at Heaton Park to support a cherished teaching assistant who is currently undergoing treatment for cancer.

Mrs Jackson, known for her dedication and long-standing service at Elm Wood, in Middleton, has been an integral part of the school community, with her family also having strong ties to the institution.

After learning of her diagnosis earlier this year, the Elm Wood team, along with Mrs Jackson's family, including one of her daughters who works at the school, decided to join the Race for Life event to show their solidarity and support.

The diverse team, which included staff, governors, and members of the Parents, Teachers and Friends Association (PTFA), showcased their support by running, walking, jogging, and even singing their way through the 5K course.

Their collective efforts have already raised over £5,000 for cancer research, highlighting the community's commitment to both their colleague and the cause.

Headteacher Gemma Holt told Rochdale Online News: “As a team we wanted to show our support for our very special colleague and help to raise as much money as we could.

“We wish Mrs Jackson a very speedy recovery and we can't wait to see her back with us at school.”
