Suspected drug driver arrested in neighbourhood police patrol

Date published: 26 June 2024

A teenager has been arrested after police concluded a positive roadside drug test, as part of a crackdown on dangerous driving in the borough.

On the evening of 22 June, neighbourhood beat officers PC Marvell and PC Giblin were on patrol for anti-social behaviour on Rooley Moor Road near Catley Lane Head when they detected the smell of cannabis emanating from a parked vehicle.

Upon searching the three occupants under the Misuse of Drugs Act, a small amount of cannabis was discovered. The driver, a 17-year-old male, failed a roadside drug test and was arrested for drug driving. The two passengers received cannabis warnings.

Sargeant Walsh of the Rochdale North Neighbourhood Team said: "There is no excuse for driving under the influence of drink or drugs. Greater Manchester Police will always take action to ensure the safety of all road users. Drink and drug driving wrecks lives."
