Meanwood Primary School in Rochdale
A primary school in Rochdale has hailed the success of an upgrade in their Ofsted rating following a recent inspection.
Meanwood Primary School was previously rated as ‘Requires Improvement’ until Ofsted inspectors came knocking in February. The Churchill Street site was given a ‘Good’ rating in all categories including education quality; behaviour and attitudes; personal development; leadership and management; and early years provision.
The school’s leaders explained that there have been significant changes to the curriculum for the better since they saw their rating dropped back in 2021 – something highlighted in the report published by the education watchdog at the end of April.
“Pupils enjoy coming to school and discovering new learning with their friends,” the report read. “Pupils at this school are kind and caring.
“They form strong and trusting bonds with each other and staff. They know that they can talk to any member of staff if they are worried. Pupils’ behaviour is commendable.
“They adhere to the school’s core values. For example, they are responsible and respectful.
“Typically, the school’s expectations of pupils’ achievement are high. This helps to make sure that pupils achieve well overall across a range of subjects.
“Pupils are polite and welcoming. They are curious about the world around them and contribute positively to the calm and purposeful nature of the school.”
Inspectors added that in order to improve further, assessments and the delivery of the curriculum needs to be consistent so pupils can achieve their potential. The school also needs to promote spirituality and cultural diversity more consistently as pupil understanding lacks in some areas, the report found.
However, the report highlighted the focus on reading, with the school promoting reading for pleasure which includes children’s authors and poetry. Inspectors explained that phonics and early reading curriculums are taught effectively by well-trained staff.
Reacting to the Ofsted report, Headteacher Helen Vyse said: “We are delighted that the hard work of the children, staff and governors has been recognised by Ofsted.
“There have been significant changes to the curriculum since the previous Ofsted and this has ensured that the children now know more and can remember more.
“The Early Years curriculum has been updated and investment in the learning environment has been made to give our very youngest children the best possible start to their education.
“We are very proud of the good grade from Ofsted and we will continue to improve on this success.”
