McDonald’s rolling out Makin’ it initiative nationwide following success in Rochdale

Date published: 09 May 2024

A partnership between social enterprise Upturn and McDonald’s is being rolled out on a national scale after success in Rochdale.

Over the last 18 months, McDonald’s Rochdale Kingsway has been part of a national pilot to build Makin’ it, a programme that provides young people with genuine opportunity in the areas they live in.

As one of the Northwest’s biggest private sector youth employers, McDonald’s Rochdale Kingsway was one of 70+ restaurants paired with local youth projects and youth workers, giving young people in Rochdale a safe place to seek support. This partnership success has now rolled out to surrounding Greater Manchester areas including Oldham.

Makin’ it will now be expanded nationally, with all 1,450 McDonald’s restaurants connected to youth services and the funding of 500 new youth work qualifications, in order to help unlock the potential of young people in every community.

McDonald’s will also be diverting an unspent part of its apprenticeship levy to support more youth workers to undertake their youth work apprenticeship in England.

John Kinsey, business manager of McDonald’s Rochdale Kingsway, said: “For the past two years, McDonald’s Kingsway had the privilege of collaborating with Upturn, a partnership that has not only been successful, but has also brought about meaningful change.

“Through this alliance, we’ve forged a strong working relationship and have had the opportunity to closely engage with students who join us on a weekly basis. Our recent work with Upturn has revolved around integrating these students into our workforce, providing them with valuable hands-on experience.

“Each week, they rotate through different stations within our restaurants, all while completing e-learning modules under careful supervision. This structured approach not only exposes them to various aspects of the business but also installs in them the confidence and skills needed to succeed in a professional environment.

“One of the hallmarks of our partnership has been the internship program, where students commit to working with us for up to 12 weeks at a time. Noah, our first student on internship, is a shining example of the success that can be achieved through hard work and dedication.

“Starting as an intern, Noah has now become a valued member of our team, actively contributing to our operations and even taking on roles as a mentor to newer students.

“Our collaboration with Upturn goes beyond mere business objectives. It’s about making a meaningful impact in the lives of these students, providing them with opportunities to thrive and grow.

“By breaking down prejudices and stigmas associated with additional needs, we’re not just offering employment opportunities; we’re empowering individuals to become self-sufficient adults.

“As we reflect on our journey with Upturn, we’re filled with pride and a sense of responsibility. We recognise the importance of our role in creating a more inclusive society, where everyone has the chance to pursue their dreams and contribute to the community.

“Through our continued partnership with Upturn, we remain committed to fostering success and creating a brighter future for all.”

Gerald Thompson, franchisee of 18 restaurants across Greater Manchester, said: “It’s no secret that young people today are facing some incredibly challenging times, particularly when it comes to accessing trusted adult support and opportunities.

“With over 30% of my workforce being under 25, we’ve seen first-hand the difference that access to training, jobs and support can make. We want all young people in our Rochdale community to feel like they have opportunities to make the most of their life and broaden their horizons, so with the scale of the Makin’ It project, we have the ability to make a real difference.

“We have already seen some fantastic results since we began working with Upturn not least the level of engagement that we have had from our partner and the young worker.

“It just goes to show how valuable it is to be there for young people, and we hope we can continue working with Upturn to make a meaningful impact and difference to a generation.”
