Community and Contribute Week proves a big hit at Alkrington Primary School

Staff and pupils from Alkrington Primary School immersed themselves into a hectic Community and Contribute Week.

Activities throughout a busy week included a visit to a local care home, the library, Alkrington Woods, a local nature reserve, while staff and pupils also got stuck into stints of litter picking around the local area.

The school also welcomed visits from the M6 Theatre group and the Neeli Mosque.

The week-long event is an annual celebration which aims to build a sense of community, because that is one of the school's core values.

The activities allow children to see what being community-minded and contributing to the wider community looks and feels like, which is intended to inspire them to become active citizens of the world both now and as they move into adulthood.

 

 

As well as all the activities, the school community collected hundreds of food items, which have been donated to the Lighthouse Project to benefit local families, and masses of hygiene products, which will be donated to the Hygiene Bank.

In addition to this, every class prepared a food item (involving cooking and baking from scratch) and sold these to families, with the money being donated to Cold hands, Warm hearts, a local homeless charity.

Just under 40 bags bursting with litter was picked from all across Alkrington, while the Year 6 class planted trees in Wince Brook and Year 6 and 4 visited Alkrington Reform Church to carry out intergenerational work.

 

 

Years 1-4 visited the library, while Year 4 also worked with Groundwork to carry out land surveys and improve the local area in Alkrington Woods.

The school council visited the Lighthouse Project to learn about the work they do there and drop off donations children and families had collected throughout the week, while Imams and a representative (Sama Mushtaq) from Neeli Mosque visited to talk about the work they do to support the community.

Mr Mushtaq said: "It was great to participate for a full day at the community week.

"Imam Yeamin and Imam Samar from Neeli Mosque also had a great time visiting the classes and delivering the assembly.

"The learners had very thought-provoking questions that kept the Imams engaged throughout the day."

M6 carried out a workshop around climate change, which linked in with a Deep Democracy event the children will participate in during June.

Sarah from M6 Theatre said: "Thanks so much, and thanks for having me. I loved working with Year 6 and really hope I get to visit Alkrington Primary School again soon. I hope they had fun planting trees and litter picking the following day."
