Go green during energy saving week

Date published: 23 October 2008

It is Energy Saving Week and organisers, the Energy Saving Trust, want to remind Rochdale residents that they should strike up a balance between their busy daily lives and finding time to be green.

Council Cabinet Member for Environment, Councillor Wera Hobhouse, is asking Rochdale Online readers to think of one idea during Energy Saving Week that will help save energy in their home.

She said: "Each year during Energy Saving Week I think of one measure that could make my household more energy efficient. Last year we put loft insulation into our roof. This year I will buy another old fashioned drying rack that you can pull up to your ceiling so your clothes can dry inside without taking away any space. I have got one already, but it isn’t big enough so I always end up throwing things in the tumble dryer. Tumble drying is really high in energy use and I know I need to stop using it."

"Everybody can do a small bit to save energy and, with the credit crunch energy companies have put their prices up by 23% in the last three months, the incentive to do something couldn’t be higher. Take the Energy Saving Week as a starting point to think of long term sustainable changes in your home."

Councillor Hobhouse is urging readers to use the Rochdale Online messageboard to exchange energy saving ideas.
