Police call time on law breaking pub

Greater Manchester Police is warning landlords not to break the conditions of their licence after time was called on a Rochdale pub.

The Woolpack on Rooley Moor Road had its licence revoked on Friday (17 October) for failing to comply with the conditions of the licence, despite several previous warnings for remaining open after 11pm and allowing on-street drinking outside the premises.

The pub is no longer permitted to sell alcohol.

GMP provided evidence to the licensing committee to assist with the decision to revoke the licence. Police say the decision reflects the serious failures and breaches of licence conditions attributed to the premises and its management.

Superintendent Bryan Lawton of GMP’s Rochdale Division said: “This is evidence that if licensed premises fail to act upon our warnings, the authorities will come down hard. This is not a game. There was plenty of opportunity for the pub to amend its working practices, but it has demonstrated a blatant disregard for the conditions orginally imposed.
“The success of this closure shows the force’s commitment to working with partner agencies to encourage responsible retailing of alcohol throughout the borough. Pubs and clubs obviously play an important role within the town, however we cannot and will not tolerate premises that are poorly managed.

“We will continue to work closely with our partners to reduce crime and anti-social behaviour and will continue to target those that cause the greatest problems."
