Police warn of increased burglaries
Date published: 21 October 2008
Greater Manchester’s Police Chief took to the streets earlier today (Tuesday 21 October) in a bid to warn people of a predicted rise in burglaries.
In the past month alone there have been 297 more burglaries across Greater Manchester compared to last year. This figure is expected to rise further with the nights drawing in, providing more opportunities for burglars. Police also anticipate that the Christmas credit crunch and impending recession will further fuel this situation.
One in three burglaries is down to people leaving doors and windows unlocked or open and in some areas of the region this can be as much as one in two.
Chief Constable Peter Fahy said: “This is a real concern for us. It is our top priority and we are committing extra resources as part of Operation Guardian to combat this recent rise.
“Officers are already spending a considerable amount of time on the streets night and day literally checking people’s windows and doors. We have been met with some disgruntled residents, but we feel it is better to be safe than sorry. No one wants to wake up in the morning to an empty house.
“I hope me being here today will make people think more about their home security and keep their belongings safe.”
Over the next few months, there will be more officers on the streets to act as a deterrent to thieves, disrupt criminal activity and reassure residents living in vulnerable areas. Known offenders will also be targeted across the Force, with officers making arrests and bringing them to justice.
Crime prevention advice promoting the ‘Lock-up, Keep them out!’ message will also be circulated to communities across the Force, paying particular attention to the hotspot areas. An advertising campaign will further support this advice, offering safety tips on how to keep homes safe.
