The Norden Christmas lights switch-on
This year’s Norden Christmas lights switch-on has been hailed the ‘best ever’ by organisers NEEVA (Norden Environmental & Economic Village Association).
The colourful lights were switched on by the Mayor and Mayoress Mike and Margaret Holly, who were joined by Father Christmas, his elves and the Grinch, before a firework display.
Children also had the chance to meet Father Christmas in Santa’s Grotto at Easy Street personal training and physiotherapy with a few treats for those on the ‘nice’ list.
Villagers enjoyed variety of seasonal treats, including bratwurst hotdogs, mulled wine, kebabs and one pots from Bombay Brew and the Quirky Catering Company, plus festive food from Wildbloods of Norden, Catherine’s Café and Coffee Shop, and Mobile Pizza Van.
The public were also treated to Christmas dance performances by Fab Dance and a chorus of classic carols from the choir at Whittaker Moss Primary School and PTA.
Hosting the event was DJ Tommy K, with lighting, snow machine and a stage and the night was stewarded by NEEVA volunteers.
Festive markets filled the Norden Bowling & Social Club, and a raffle of a Christmas hamper sponsored by the Norden Co-op; tickets are still on sale there and the winner will be announced soon.
NEEVA Chairman Paul Ellison said: “We always like for Norden to have these big celebrations. The village has gone from strength to strength and it was so extremely well attended, I believe a record attendance, thousands descended into the village"
"I would like to thank everyone who helped make the night as magical as it was, the shops, the market traders and everyone who came out, especially the volunteers and the Norden Co-op for NEEVA recently receiving their local community fund."
Mr Ellison added: "A special thank you goes to the Norden W.I., H Bells and Sons, Caroline Yates, Rachel Greenwood, Lilly Greenwood, Phil Starr, Andrew Dunham, Emma Metcalfe, Angus Pickup, Mark Widdup, Jennifer Parkinson, Christine McHugh, Chrissie Wolstenholme, Rosemary Nunwick, Graham Sivills FBCS, Michael Howarth, Benjamin Boothman from The Lancashire Hospitality Co-operation, Rochdale Borough Council, Frank Key Tool Hire, and Johnny Roberts from Total Smart Solutions.
"After the switch -on of the lights and fireworks, this officially declares Norden ready for Christmas.
“It was great to see a well-attended event supported by a large number of villagers and so many young residents who seemed to have a particularly good evening.
“Extensive support of the businesses and companies and local residents, highlights the message that as we approach the festive season, Norden has a vibrant and diverse heart. Many thanks are due to all who staged and participated on this very enjoyable event."
Phil Starr, member of NEEVA, said: "The Christmas light switch-on provides an opportunity for Norden retailers to showcase the diverse offer that the village provides.
“Not only were our range of food and drink businesses having a busy night, but it gave visitors who may not normally stop off in the high street, a chance to see what Norden can offer, such as its gym, salons, florist, card shop and high quality fashion and they all hope to welcome people back in the near future."
Mayor of Rochdale and Norden councillor, Mike Holly, said: “The Mayoress and I thoroughly enjoyed the Norden Christmas lights switch-on. We had some of our grandchildren on the stage with us when I switched on the lights with Father Christmas which made it extra special for us.
“The turn out was amazing and will boost the economy of the village. Thanks to NEEVA again for their magnificent effort in putting on the best evening yet. The efforts of the volunteers is huge. It is such a privilege to represent such a wonderful community. Merry Christmas everyone!"
