Residents of Springbank Care Home in Heywood were recently visited by children from St Luke’s CE Primary School.

Students from the school council visited the residents on 9 November, playing games, colouring and chatting to the residents.

Hayley Lomax, class teacher and RSE, wellbeing and school council leader, said: “It was beautiful to watch and quite emotional to see the amazing interactions and conversations between them. Both the residents and children thoroughly enjoyed the afternoon.

“The staff from Springbank commented on how well-behaved and well-mannered the children are and the residents cannot wait for their next visit from other children in school.

“Some of our highlights were Alfie saying he’d got three new best friends, Mimi continually complimenting a resident’s colouring when the resident was upset she couldn’t colour well due to struggling with her hands, Daniel dancing with the residents, a resident exclaiming that they really enjoyed the day as the children left, Jackson “letting a lady win” to make her feel better and the children returning to school telling everyone how amazing their experience was.”

The partnership between the Heywood school and the care home came after St Luke’s school council decided they would like to do more in the community this academic year. After discussing a few ideas, they decided they would like to set up a link with a local care home.

Miss Lomax added: “We have plans for our Ethos team to visit in a couple of weeks to make Christingles with the residents, and for our school choir to perform songs and get the residents singing with them, closer to Christmas.

“We are so incredibly proud of the children.”
