Rock Nook Mill in Littleborough
Rock Nook Mill at Summit in Littleborough is being demolished after part of the historic building collapsed recently.
The former Fothergill & Harvey textile mill, which has lain derelict for many years, is being demolished after a partial uncontrolled collapse of the building.
A section of Lightowlers Lane has been closed whilst the emergency works take place.
Rochdale Borough Council contacted the owners after part of the mill collapsed, with the owner deciding to demolish the long-vacant building due to the danger of further imminent collapses onto a public road.
Usually planning permission is required to demolish a building, but with a high risk of public safety, a demolition can take place without it. The council has confirmed this has been the case with Rock Nook Mill, undertaken by the mill owner.
The mill, constructed in 1886, has been a Littleborough landmark for nearly 140 years, but has been derelict for many years.
It was also subject to a large fire in 2015.
