Children campaign against climate change at Deeplish Community Centre

Date published: 22 August 2023

Children and volunteers at the Deeplish Summer Holiday Activity and Food programme at Deeplish Community Centre have shown great enthusiasm over the past few weeks as they engaged with sessions focused on the environment and climate change.

A tailored ‘litter hero’ workshop was a great success, with the children pledging to help keep their community clean and pass on the message to adults.

As part of the exercise, they completed a local litter pick to understand the negative impact of littering on the local environment. They even separated the cans and bottles so these could go on to be recycled.

As well as partaking in recycling challenges and understanding which waste goes into each bin, the community centre programme also explored the climate and how young people can help the planet.

Children and volunteers also visited green places to learn about nature and the impact of climate change on Earth.

They also enjoyed spinning a special ‘climate wheel’ before coming up with ideas about how they can help, showing impressive knowledge about the environment.

Nigel Goulding, environmental education officer, said: “This helps with our commitment to make our borough a more environmentally friendly place to live and work.”

Sohail Ahmad, operations manager at Deeplish Community Centre, said: “We are training our volunteers and young people to become community champions in climate change and to become involved in making our neighbourhood better, by linking in with local and regional climate change strategies.

“Our volunteers have delivered many workshops, sessions as well green activities to kick start this campaign and we are committed to continue in raising awareness, education about green spaces, climate change and our duty as citizens.

“All ages enjoyed the sessions and behaved impeccably throughout.”
