Rochdale Riverside Market returns to The Butts twice a week after re-opening

Date published: 15 June 2023

Rochdale’s centuries-old market has re-opened at The Butts two days a week, months after grinding to a halt.

The Rochdale Riverside Market is now being run by a group of traders known as the Rochdale Riverside Traders’ Association with market days being held on Mondays and Wednesdays.

The market’s future had previously been thrown into jeopardy four years ago when the council announced it could no longer afford to subsidise stallholders.

Traders ultimately stepped in to run the market themselves, despite their initial proposal being rejected as ‘not viable’.

However, the Riverside Market was only held sporadically towards the end of last year before grinding to a halt after existing arrangements broke down.

The market’s plight was raised with the council in February by Councillor Shahid Mohammed after traders voiced their concerns at the most recent Milkstone & Deeplish area forum meeting.

Amolak Singh, chairman of the Rochdale Riverside Traders' Association, said the re-opening wouldn’t have been possible without help from Levi Rickell and Mohammad Nadeem, both of the Rochdale Development Agency; Ghulam Rasul Shahzad OBE; Councillor Shahid Mohammed; members of the association, and customers.

He added: “The re-opening of the market would not be possible without the support and co-operation of the above persons, and we would like to thank them.

“Rochdale has a long history of having a successful market and our members would like to maintain it.

“We will try our best to provide quality services to meet the needs of our customers and bring our customers back.

“We'll be open to receiving suggestions and ideas to improve our services to the members of the public.”

The Rochdale Riverside Market will be held on The Butts on Mondays and Wednesdays each week.
