Rochdale Mind celebrates anniversary

Date published: 14 October 2008

Rochdale and District Mind celebrated its 20th anniversary on Friday (10 October) to coincide with World Mental Health Day.

More than 200 people attended the event at Heywood Civic Hall, which celebrated the achievements of 'a local organisation providing services for local people' empowering people who experience mental distress to live full lives and play their full part in society.

Mind Chief Executive Tricia Hornby declared the day of activities a 'huge success' and guests commented on what an enjoyable day it had been.

Voluntary organisations, healthcare professionals and local dignitaries were all present on the day and Ivan Lewis, MP for Bury South, gave the keynote address on the World Mental Health Day theme of ‘Advocacy and Action’.

Gill Bamford, Chairman of Rochdale and District Mind said: "I’ve been involved through the development and success of Mind for 16 years, and look forward to the exciting times ahead as we continue to grow. This was a great day for everyone to find out how we provide services with and for our service users in taking control of their lives."

Started by mental health service users in Rochdale, and still service user led, the charity has been contributing to their recovery since 1988. The event will be both a celebration of past achievement and a look ahead at the part Rochdale Mind will play in the future of local health and social care.

There was a varied programme of activities throughout the day’s event including a 'Family Fortunes' style game show on the topic of Advocacy and the launch of a DVD showcasing the work of the organisation. Just Poets were on hand to capture the essence of the day in their poetic style, along with local band 'One Way' providing lunchtime entertainment.
