Avenue FC clubhouse destroyed in arson attack

Date published: 17 May 2023

The Avenue Football Club clubhouse was destroyed after a fire on Sunday night (14 May).

The clubhouse, based at Heywood Sports Village, has been burnt out, causing the small grassroots club to lose their space for players and volunteers to meet and work from, as well as essential equipment.

Police have confirmed the fire is being treated as arson.

The club hopes to raise £1,000 to replace their equipment and replace the clubhouse, or find alternative premises.

Gemma Tobin, club secretary, said: “Avenue FC is a small, not-for-profit football club; our committee of volunteers, players, coaching staff and the fans work hard to bring football and entertainment to the local community.

“Unfortunately, the clubhouse, based at Heywood Sports Village was set alight and has been burnt out. We have lost equipment and a space for our players to meet up and socialise and for our volunteers to work from.

“If you can spare any amount, no matter how big or small to help us replace our equipment and rebuild/find an alternative premises, it would be greatly appreciated by everyone at the club.”
