BLOKES don flat caps for charity

Date published: 03 May 2023

The BLOKES at Hare Hill House support group held a ‘flat cap’ fundraiser on Wednesday 26 April.

Each attendee donned their finest flat caps and donated £1 – with a penalty surcharge for no cap – with the aim of raising £200 for the family of a young man who has recently died.

An impressive £227 was raised on the day, which will now become an annual event for the BLOKES.

The next ‘flat cap fundraiser’ will be held on Flat Cap Day in February. Some research by Nick Andrews revealed that flat caps have been subject to law and fines since the 1700s, whilst flat caps can be worn by ladies in the enclosure at Ascot.

The group’s founder, Peter Reed, said: “We as a group have had tremendous support from the community. We can give a little back today. Thank you to all the BLOKES.”

BLOKES meets at Hare Hill House every Wednesday at 1.30pm, providing a quiet space for men to socialise with no forced conversation or interactions, or awkward questions. Men of any age can attend and enjoy a cup of tea or coffee, cakes and biscuits over a game of dominoes, cards or darts.

BLOKES at Hare Hill House also has a Facebook page for any men interested in attending, or bringing a friend or relative to one of the groups.
