Horse trapped on ledge rescued by fire service

Date published: 20 April 2023

A horse had to be rescued by the fire service after it became trapped on a ledge in Heywood.

The horse was found on Ashworth Road on Friday morning (14 April) by local resident Heléna Abrahams and a dog walker.

Heléna said: “We decided to call the fire brigade as the horse was getting anxious. The fire brigade were on scene so fast and were amazing. They carry an amazing kit to help trapped animals.”

One fire engine from Bury Central fire station along with the Water Incident Unit from Heywood and Technical Response Unit from Ashton quickly attended the scene and used bolt croppers, a hearth kit and Milwaukee saw to rescue the horse.

A spokesperson for Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service (GMFRS) said: “Firefighters were in attendance for around forty minutes.”
