Jolly Josh lifeguard Tom jumps feet first into training for big Rochdale run

Date published: 20 April 2023

Inspired by seeing first-hand the determination shown by disabled children to reach their hydrotherapy pool goals, local lifeguard, Tom Holmes is continuing his efforts to help children in the borough, by pledging to run the Williams BMW Rochdale Half Marathon in aid of Castleton-based charity, Jolly Josh this October.

Juggling his role in the Jolly Josh Hydrotherapy Team with his studies for a degree in physiotherapy, qualified lifeguard Tom has stepped up to the challenge of running his first half marathon to raise funds to help children with complex medical needs and physical disabilities who visit The Jolly Josh Centre.

Speaking about his reasons for signing up for the local half marathon, 18-year-old Tom said: “I meet the most amazing children and families during their hydrotherapy sessions in the pool at Jolly Josh. What stands out to me is how children of all ages, from babies to teenagers, face the most daunting challenges with determination, positivity and above all, lots of smiles and laughter.

“When I heard that Jolly Josh had been chosen as one of the official charities of this year’s Williams BMW Rochdale Half Marathon, 10K and Fun Run, I thought I’d take a leaf out of the books of the children at Jolly Josh.

“I’ve set myself two challenges that channel my own determination, as well as make me, my family and the Jolly Josh families proud - fundraising and crossing the finishing line of my first half marathon!

“Signing up for this flagship event will help Jolly Josh kids and give me a great opportunity to run around some of the most picturesque areas of my hometown.”

As training nights get lighter, and the weather warms up, Tom is hoping he will set a good example for others to follow, as he trains for this event to support Jolly Josh at this year’s Williams BMW Run on Sunday 8 October 2023.

Setting off from the Esplanade, in front of Rochdale’s iconic town hall, participants can get involved with one of three routes, 1 mile fun run, 10K or the 13.1 mile half marathon. Jolly Josh supporters will receive reduced entry fees, as well as a beautiful Jolly Josh running vest, the support of the team at Jolly Josh and the knowledge that every step they take will be raising funds to help disabled children in the borough of Rochdale.
