Firefighters called to Rochdale Interchange after smoke spotted

Date published: 14 April 2023

Firefighters were called to Rochdale Interchange on Thursday morning (13 April) after smoke was seen coming from the McColl’s store inside.

Smoke could be seen coming from the shop whilst a fire alarm could be heard blaring - although it transpired there was no fire and the smoke had been triggered by a smoke cloak security device.

Three fire engines attended the scene, and spent half an hour on site using an electric fan to remove the smoke and ventilate the building.

A Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service spokesperson said: “Shortly after 6.30am, firefighters were called out to reports of smoke at a convenience store in a bus terminal on Smith Street, Rochdale.

“Three fire engines from Rochdale and Heywood attended the scene where a smoke cloak security system had been activated.

“Crews used an electric fan to ventilate the building and were in attendance for approximately 30 minutes.”
