A new resource has been published to help raise awareness of domestic violence and abuse within the BAME community (Black, Asian, Minority Ethnic).
Rochdale community group Become United has created the information pack, Life Without Fear, for people in the borough. The pack outlines what domestic abuse is, how to find help, how to help someone you’re worried about and advice for friends and family.
Research has shown that every year, 2.3 million adults aged 16 to 74 experience domestic abuse (1.6 million women and 757,000 men). One in six men and one in four women will be a victim of domestic abuse in their lifetime.
Data from the Office for National Statistics (2019) data has shown that rates of domestic abuse amongst BAME communities are often higher than in white communities, and were also highest amongst those of mixed ethnicity.
There are many different reasons why this may be happening, such as religious and cultural beliefs.
Domestic abuse isn’t always physical: it can also be emotional, psychological, sexual, or financial.
Become United is a community group for the Greater Manchester BAME community, focusing on four areas: mental health, sport, youth and resources.
The pack can be viewed here.
