Lantern Academy raise £3,000 for Turkish earthquake victims

Date published: 07 March 2023

Students of Lantern Academy, Rochdale, have raised over £3,000 for the earthquake victims in Turkey.

A devastating earthquake hit the country near the border with Syria on 6 February, which has killed around 46,000 people in Turkey and over 6,000 in Syria.

According to officials, at least 1.5 million people are now homeless.

The students organised a non-uniform day where they wore the colour red to show their support for Turkey, as well as cupcake sales, sweet sales and much more. Some students even took fundraising boxes home to raise money from their family and friends.

Head of Education Mohammed Shahid said he was “so proud” of the students.

He added: “They went above and beyond to support the victims of the earthquake. The staggering amount raised shows their sheer dedication. Well done to all involved.”

Lantern Academy is a branch of the Golden Mosque which was founded in 1963 as the first mosque in Rochdale.

Based on Lower Sheriff Street, the academy is a supplementary school that teaches over 300 students from across the borough of Rochdale from primary to GCSE level in Quran recitation, Islamic studies, maths, English and much more.
