Littleborough man throws hat in ring to become president-elect of British Psychological Society

Date published: 07 March 2023

A man from Littleborough is one of four candidates standing for the position of president-elect within the British Psychological Society.

Jimmy Petruzzi, originally of Sydney, Australia, who came to the UK in 1995, is hoping to be elected to the role within the society. The successful candidate will serve one year as president-elect, followed by two years as president from 2024.

He said: “I am a lifelong learner of modalities, applying principles from the arts, martial arts, sport and business into my delivery.

“I am from an ethnic minority and I’m passionate about promoting inclusivity and diversity.

“I would like to promote a diverse representation of the society, in terms of age, race, religion, nationality, sexual orientation, gender, gender identity, and national origin, which brings diverse viewpoints and perspectives.

“Having an inclusive culture makes people feel valued and proud of their culture. Diversity in the workplace statistics show that having an inclusive culture and reflecting a variety of backgrounds and experiences encourages others to embrace non-discriminatory practices and policies.

“All members feel included when they feel ‘safe’ to voice their concerns and opinions without fear of victimisation.

“The freedom of expression without fear also empowers people to not just listen to but also actively embrace diverse viewpoints.

“I truly want everyone to feel included, taking into account any barriers and preferences, and embracing different people from different backgrounds and generations, with sometimes vastly different perspectives.”

A published author and lecturer, Jimmy also works as a performance coach for Bacup Borough FC, and as a radio broadcaster for Salford City Radio.

A performance coach for over 20 years, he has worked around the world with many top businesses, entrepreneurs, corporations, professional football teams and individuals at national and international level in the English premiership and worldwide.

Jimmy is currently a committee member, communications officer and co-chair elect of the North West of England branch of the BPS, editor of the North of England Bulletin and member of senate where he works to develop and execute marketing and public relations campaigns and social media management.

He also manages and plans events like Psychology in the City and Psychology in the Community, and was short-listed as a president-elect candidate last year.

Voting is open until 31 March for BPS members who are eligible to vote.

The successful candidate will be announced at the British Psychological Society’s Annual General Meeting on 26 July.
