Last chance to register to vote in transport referendum

Date published: 10 October 2008

Anyone that has moved house in the last few months and has not yet returned their electoral roll registration form will not be able to vote in the Greater Manchester wide referendum on public transport and congestion charging next month.

Out of the 90,000 registration forms sent out to households across Rochdale, almost a quarter haven’t been completed and returned to the council yet.

If the names of the people living in a property have not changed in the last year, it just takes a couple of minutes to sign the form and post it back. If the names have changed, it is simply a case of crossing out the names of the people who do not live in the property and writing in any new ones.

The form must then be returned in the freepost envelope provided as soon as possible.

Households that have not sent their registrations back will receive a personal visit over the next couple of weeks by someone who is able to help complete the form.

If there is no-one in, they will get a letter asking to complete and return the forms provided previously.

Councillor Alan Taylor, Leader of Rochdale Council, said: “If you want to have your say on the future of transport in Greater Manchester then you must be on the electoral roll at your current address. If you’re not on the list, you won’t get a vote – it’s as simple as that. This is your last chance to return the form so please make sure you do it straight away if you haven’t already.”
