Seven weeks between arrest and sentence for young offenders
Date published: 09 October 2008
Latest figures show that 51 days pass between a persistant young offender in Greater Manchester being arrested to them being sentenced.
In 1996 the Ministry of Justice pledged to halve the average time from arrest to sentence for persistent young offenders in England and Wales from 142 days to 71 days, so Greater Manchester is performing well below that pledge.
Greater Manchester is also performing below the national average of 54 days.
Between December 2007 and February 2008 the average in Greater Manchester was 61 days, so it has been reduced by 10 days in six months, with the latest figures applying to July this year.
