Springhill Hospice to close three of its charity shops

Date published: 08 February 2023

Three of Springhill Hospice's charity shops are to be closed down and sold, due to the ongoing struggles of the economic climate.

The Yorkshire Street, Heywood and Whitworth shops will be closed and sold, with capital from the shop sales going towards addressing the £1 million deficit in funding that the hospice is currently facing.

The decision to close these particular shops has been made based on their reduced footfall, floor space shortage and lack of nearby parking; areas that will be highly prioritised when searching for any new retail premises in the future.

Springhill’s remaining shops located in Middleton, Littleborough, the Emporium at Jackson’s Corner, Oldham Road, and Coffee at the Craven on Broad Lane will remain open.

Sam Wells, chief executive at Springhill Hospice, said: “The hospice is in a precarious financial position due to the huge impact of inflation and the cost-of-living crisis.

“We are in a position where we are having to make difficult but smart decisions to maximise our chance of getting the hospice to a sustainable financial position, so we can continue to provide vital hospice care and services across the borough.

“We would like to say an enormous thank you to everyone who has shopped with us and to our volunteers and staff, both past and present, across these three shops.”
