Schoolgirls, 11, raise money for Ukraine

Date published: 30 December 2022

Two 11-year-old schoolgirls from St Luke’s CE Primary School in Heywood have raised over £100 for the people of Ukraine.

Ava Thomas and Ava Charnley have both been named ‘courageous advocates’ at their school after recognising the conflict, and deciding to raise money to help.

Earlier this year, pupils at the school wrote letters to children in Ukraine to boost their spirits.

Together, Ava and Ava baked and decorated scores of cupcakes for the Christmas school fair in December, raising £115.

Originally, Ava Thomas and her friends were going to run stalls at the fair to make a little bit of money for themselves, before she approached the headteacher and asked if she could bake cakes to raise money for Ukraine.

The girls were awarded the accolade of ‘courageous advocates’, a part of the school ethos where someone sees something wrong and takes steps to rectify the situation.

The money raised has been donated through the school’s connections, and the girls are hoping to repeat their success at the summer fair.
