ASBOs used to get beggars off the streets

Persistent beggars could face the prospect of Anti Social Behaviour Orders if they refuse help to try and get them off the streets.

Outreach workers are working across Rochdale to ensure that homeless people are identified and offered help but they could soon use the stick rather than the carrot to stop people begging.

Rochdale Council has launched a new campaign to urge people not to give to beggars in the town, under the slogan 'Don't kill with kindness'.

The hard-hitting message is part of a joint effort between the council, the police and local service providers, to reduce street begging and to ensure that homeless people are able to get the help they need to access housing and support services.

Cabinet member for housing, Councillor Doreen Brophy-Lee said: "The council wants to help people off the streets and into a better way of life. I know people mean well when they give money directly to beggars and in the past I’ve done it myself, but it just helps them to stay on the streets for longer which is no good for them and no good for the communities they are living in.

“There is no shortage of help for homeless people in the borough and the council funds local charities and support services to make sure that all homeless people have access to accommodation, treatment services, benefits, food and clothing. My message is really simple - don’t kill with kindness - give to charity instead.”

The council is encouraging people to donate money to homeless projects in Rochdale, such as Petrus or the Salvation Army, rather than giving money directly to beggars.
