Trading Standards seize cannisters of laughing gas

Nitrous oxide (NOS, laughing gas) cannisters were seized by Trading Standards
Cannisters of laughing gas have been seized in Rochdale this week by the council’s Trading Standards team.
This comes after the BBC reported that the widely used recreational drug is rising in popularity, with the small silver cannisters, often seen littering the streets, being swapped for ‘supersize’ versions.
Nitrous oxide – or NOS – is used in whipped cream dispensers and medically to relieve pain. It’s not against the law to sell, unless supplied for its psychoactive effects.
Currently in the UK, being in possession of a larger cannister isn’t illegal or against the law.
Upon conviction, sellers may be sentenced to up to twelve months’ imprisonment and/or an unlimited fine.
A spokesperson for the council added: “Inhaling nitrous oxide can produce effects such as euphoria, a sense of relaxation, fits of laughter and hallucinations.
“However, the inhalation can result in a lack of oxygen, leading to unconsciousness or even suffocation. Long-term health problems can include nerve damage and the prevention of the formation of white blood cells.”
