For the last two years, Frankie Mellor has not only been working towards her GCSEs, she has been having sometimes daily seizures.

On results day, the Whitworth Community High School student was delighted to discover she had passed all five of the exams she was able to sit along with a level 2 distinction Star for her PE and a distinction for health and social care.

She is now hoping to have secured a place at Burnley College to study criminology, psychology and PE.

Frankie, 16, said: “Two years ago I started having seizures; it all started at the end of 2020 and it was happening all the time throughout Year 10 and 11.

“I was in and out of Royal Oldham Hospital and I had to home school myself and teach myself. On the days when I went into school, I often had a seizure and they ended up having to send me back home.” Frankie was well supported when she could be in school by staff and by her close friends.

Mum Gemma said: “The last two years have been horrendous.”

Medics have said her fits are not caused by epilepsy and could be hormonal but are not sure about the underlying cause.

Frankie added: “I worked so hard, even when I was in hospital.”
