Springhill High School will be opening its doors to welcome business leaders, education experts and Government representatives, after being recognised for its work in building stronger links with the community.

The Specialist Schools and Academies Trust’s 2008 Futures Vision Tour Awards (FVTA), launched this week, will visit 11 schools across the country to celebrate the important role teachers and staff are playing in placing the school at the heart of the community.

The tour will be arriving at Springhill High School on Monday (6 October).

Annabel Bolt, head teacher at the high school, said: “We are absolutely delighted to be part of the Futures Vision Tour Awards as a school at the heart of the community. At Springhill we are passionate about our community it gives us the inspiration and motivation to strive to be an outstanding school.

“'Achievement for All’ is the school motto and this extends to all cultural groups within the school. Our record of welcoming new arrivals from a rapidly increasing number of new nationalities over the last few years is testament to the ability of our pupils and staff to appreciate cultural differences.

“The community cohesion is strong and it allows us to maintain a vibrant and exciting platform for learning.”

Springhill High School has just become a Trust school linking with Zen Internet and Rochdale Boroughwide Housing to bring different areas of experience and expertise to the partnership.

The partnership has a shared commitment to improve the life chances of young people in the area. These are committed to supporting the school, and challenging staff and students to achieve the highest standards.

The trust is also committed to helping the school develop more effective ways of using technology and local resources to benefit the community.

All of the schools on the tour have shown a commitment to help place their school at the heart of the community in a variety of ways including welcoming and encouraging adult learners, sharing resources and helping boost community cohesion.

Elizabeth Reid, Chief Executive of the SSAT, said: “I would like to congratulate these winning schools for their hard work and dedication in ensuring they are at the heart of their communities.

“Successful schools are central to the areas they serve and through innovative partnerships with a wide-range of individuals and organisations they help all young people to realise their potential and succeed.

“The SSAT’s Futures Vision Tour Awards are about recognising and rewarding this community engagement and providing schools with the opportunity to share their experiences to the benefit of others.”
