Date published: 05 July 2022

Children at Caldershaw Primary School have been visited by two professional athletes as part of their Commonwealth Sports Week.

Throughout the last week of June, professional athletes and Edstart Sports Coaching Ambassadors Ayaz Bhuta MBE and Azeem Amir hosted workshops.

Olympic Gold medallist Ayaz is a Great Britain Wheelchair Rugby team member whilst Azeem, of Rochdale, is an aspiring Paralympian who's currently representing the England and Great Britain Blind Football team.

The children have studied Commonwealth countries in their classes and admired a Commonwealth athlete as well as taking part in their traditional sports day.

A representative for the school said: “Both athletes gave the children key words of inspiration to complement their workshops: empathy and resilience. We feel honoured to have had the opportunity to meet both athletes and the children have been truly inspired.

“The children have all had fabulous traditional Sports Days including parents' races. We also had a huge fun run set up by our amazing school council to raise money for The Christie Charity, with a visit from Christie Bear and a foamy finish.

“Finally, to top the week off, the Sports Day winners and countries were celebrated in a closing ceremony.  This has been a fantastic year of sport for us as a primary school finishing on a high with achieving our Platinum School Games Mark 2021-2022 and 2022-2023.”
