Local charities receive funds from Councillor Aasim Rashid's mayoral year

Date published: 25 June 2022

Eight local charities have received cheques for monies raised during Councillor Aasim Rashid’s mayoral year which ended in May 2022.

Councillor Rashid was the 150th borough mayor and started his year during Covid-19 restrictions.

The deputy mayor for 2019-20, Councillor Rashid had to wait an extra year to become mayor, as his predecessor, fellow Castleton ward councillor Billy Sheerin, served an extended term due to the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic.

Despite many of the usual mayoral fundraising events being cancelled, Councillor Rashid raised a modest £14,000 in his year.

Donations were made on Monday 20 June to Springhill Hospice, Petrus, Parkinson’s UK, Castlemere Community Centre, Rochdale Veterans’ Breakfast Club, Rochdale Shopmobility, Rochdale Heartbeat and Jolly Josh.

Councillor Rashid was joined by his wife, former mayoress Rifit Rashid and his daughter Aiza Rashid to present the cheques.
