Sprucing up Alkrington Moss

Date published: 13 June 2022

Work to spruce up Alkrington Moss in Middleton is taking place.

The streets and car parks have been swept, repairs have started on damaged brickwork and walls, graffiti has been removed, weedkiller has been sprayed around the estate and areas outside the shops have been tidied up.

Ward councillor Dylan Williams met with Rochdale Boroughwide Housing and Rochdale Borough Council on Thursday (9 June) to meet with local residents and identify issues and responsibilities. They walked around the full estate, picking up and addressing multiple issues and identifying the council’s responsibilities and RBH's.

In attendance from RBH was head of landlord services, Sarah Robinson; head of grounds maintenance and caretaking, Julie Greenwell; and neighbourhood housing co-ordinator Claire Lord.

In attendance from the council was the cabinet member for housing and highways, Councillor Daniel Meredith; chair of Middleton Township councillor June West; and highways operation managers Steven Kerr and Louise McCulloch.

RBH has ordered new signs for each block of flats as they have all faded, and the council has ordered new street signs for the broken ones on the road. Grounds maintenance issues have been logged, as have external repairs, the car parks are being re-lined very soon, and the fences will be painted.

Councillor Williams said: “It was an excellent, productive day on Alkrington Moss at The Downs, The Glen, The Heath, The Moss, The Meadows and The Coppice. We want to make the estate a better place to live so we spoke to lots of residents on the estate who came and spoke to us all about their issues.

“As Labour councillor for East Middleton, I organised the estate walk with RBH and the council that took place to address all of the issues on the estate. This was partnership working at its finest and is a fantastic start on getting things done.

“I have also pushed for the properties to be painted in the future like other estates RBH has in Rochdale so they look more modern as they have not been done in Alkrington since the 90s. RBH are looking into this and will get back to me.

“The children’s park Rochdale Council are building outside the shops is coming on nicely. Councillor West and I are also in the process of getting a CCTV camera to cover the shops, park and carpark.”
