Springhill Hospice’s medical director takes it to the limit to support patient care

Springhill Hospice’s medical director, Dr Chris Pick, will be taking on the extraordinary Snowdon24 Challenge in July 2022 to raise vital funds to upgrade patient facilities on the In-Patient Unit. Described as ‘the ultimate endurance race,’ Dr Pick will be tackling this challenge to help raise funds to replace the now outdated nurse call system.
Dr Pick has worked at Springhill Hospice since 2005 and has played an instrumental part in the invaluable, specialist care the hospice gives to patients with life-limiting illnesses.
Dr Pick said, “Springhill’s current nurse call system has been in place since the hospice was built and now needs replacing to make sure it is fit for purpose. The nurse call system is a critical tool to support our care. It allows patients to let our nurses and carers know when they need assistance and also allows our patients to be in their own room, maintaining their privacy whilst retaining contact with our care staff.”
The Snowdon24 challenge is an extraordinary 24-hour event, taking place at the foot of the iconic Mount Snowdon. Dr Pick will be taking on the challenge of pushing himself to the limit as he attempts to ascend and descend Snowdon as many times as possible in 24 hours.
Each lap is nearly 10 miles long and presents 3,000 feet of ascent following a trail close to the railway. The summit is the highest point in England and Wales at 3,560 feet above sea level. The event starts at noon on Saturday 9 July and competitors race until the same time on Sunday.
Sam Wells, chief executive at Springhill Hospice, said: "We are so extraordinarily proud of Chris for taking on this incredible challenge. Chris will have cared for thousands of patients during his time at Springhill and is so dedicated to each and every one of them. The new nurse call system costs over £120,000 so every penny raised will be a step closer to this target."
