Children at Newlands School in Middleton celebrated the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee in style
Children at Newlands School in Middleton celebrated the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee in style with a grand-scale event before breaking up for half-term.
Each class had some tasks to do in preparation - baking for the class cake competition, designing and creating invitations, posters, Jubilee flags and Jubilee canvases.
A queen and a king were crowned and children arrived through a glorious balloon arch before ‘meeting’ the Queen herself – albeit a life-sized cardboard cut-out.
The celebrations were completed with monarchs, archbishop, musicians, the National Anthem, costumes, thrones, flag-waving and guests, followed by a street-party lunch in the corridors and a visiting ice-cream van.
The day was finished with the unveiling of a British apple tree and bubbles, plus music from Cri Du Canard – a group from ‘Live Music Now’ – before sending each child home with their own memento of the day, a Jubilee bear.
Headteacher Deborah Rogers said: “The children managed brilliantly, and the staff were, rightly, very proud. We took care to make sure the children weren’t overwhelmed by all the activities and had plenty of time to keep to some routines in class too.
“We were delighted to welcome a number of guests including school governors, ex school staff and representatives from different agencies who work with us frequently.
“The sheer delight of many children at having a ‘role’ to play, seeing their work displayed, noticing the balloon arch, experiencing live music, and bubbles, and then receiving a Jubilee bear made every moment worthwhile.
“A happy and glorious day was had by all; well done Newlands.”
